Indigenous People of the Corvallis Area
The Alsea group of Kalapuya people lived where Corvallis is now, before colonization, western expansion and European invasion/hostile takeover of their lands.
The Kalapuya people had well established communities throughout the Willamette Valley and the foothills of the coast and Cascade mountains. Extended family groups lived together and built large cedar houses. Trade and relationships among the people of the region was common. Community structures and leadership roles were well defined and helped maintain the rich and bountiful life the the Kalapuya people enjoyed and thrived in. The people of this area utilized the many natural resources available to them to keep their communities strong and prosperous. The people of this region spoke the one of the Central Kalapuyan dialects:
